Lao Language for Adults

Beginners, Level 1

This Lao language class, for absolute beginners, assumes no prior knowledge of Laotian. As with all beginner level language classes, a strong emphasis will be placed on speaking and listening, but not to the exclusion of the reading and writing of Lao script. It will introduce the alphabet and tones, as well as the writing system. A tonal language, Lao is part of the Tai family, closely related to the Isan language of NE Thailand. The two are often considered one language. The class provides an important foundation for further studies in the language. The teacher is a native speaker of Lao, with good English, and many years teaching experience. Classes are kept small. We fill seats on a first-register basis. Cambodian (Khmer) for Adults

Beginners, Level 1

This class provides an introduction to the Cambodian (Khmer) Language. It begins with a study of Khmer script, and it's alphabet of vowels, diphthongs, consonants, and the basic sounds of the language, toward correct pronunciation. Khmer is not a tonal language, but rather syllabic. Khmer script is similar in appearance and usage to Lao and Thai script, which were based on the Khmer system. The class provides an important foundation for further studies in the language. Ages: 13+. The teacher is a native speaker of Cambodian, with good English. Classes are kept small.
