Experienced calligrapher Jean Choy, originally from Hong Kong, is well known in the Chinese Portland Community for her experience and skill in the Chinese arts of calligraphy and brush painting. In her mixed level classes, beginning students learn basic techniques for writing Chinese characters, using "mao bi" (Chinese brush pen) and ink -- techniques that have been developed and perfected through centuries of experience in China. Non-beginners build on techniques learned in previous classes. Various levels of instruction are integrated into the same class.
In the not-too-distant past in China (Qing Dynasty and earlier), calligraphy was considered one of the 4 main studies that an educated person in Chinese society was expected to have mastered. The other three studies are Brush Painting, playing the "qin" or zither, and playing board games, particularly 'go'. Chinese calligraphy itself uses what are called the "four treasures": brush, paper, ink, and ink stone.
